Nancy Reagan's Breast Cancer..

Nancy Reagan's cancerous left breast was removed today in a 50-minute operation without complications, the White House said.
The cancer, seven millimeters in diameter, was about the smallest doctors can detect on a mammogram, an X-ray of the breast. Laboratory tests made on it and other tissue removed in the surgery showed that the cancer was a common form that had not spread to other areas of the breast or to nearby lymph nodes, said Marlin Fitzwater, the White House spokesman.
Mrs. Reagan was awake after the surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital, and her vital signs were ''strong and stable'' as she rested comfortably in the recovery room, Mr. Fitzwater said. President Reagan visited his wife there and told her: ''Honey, I know you don't feel like dancing. So let's hold hands.'' Prognosis Seems Favorable
The White House did not hold a briefing for reporters and Mrs. Reagan's doctors would not discuss her prognosis or plans for future treatment, if any.

Mastectomy Drain Breast Cancer Treatment

The  purpose of drains after mastectomy  is to drain away the fluid that can gather in the armpit region or around the scar on the chest wall. Some people after mastectomy also find that fluid gathers around the shoulder blade area on their back - this seems more common if the muscle from the back has been used for  breast reconstruction  at the time the mastectomy was done. When mastectomy is done - and especially if the lymph nodes are removed from the axilla or armpit - then there is a lot of tissue fluid and lymph fluid left with no where to go.
