Umbilical cord - what's its job?

In placental mammals, the umbilical cord (also called the navel string, birth cord or funiculus umbilicalis) is a conduit between the developing embryo or fetus and the placenta.

It's amazing how it all starts and it's quiet a chore to cut through this for the parents in birth. It doesn't look great but it's a pretty cool and amazing Miracle.

My eldest son had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck a couple of times. He may have been practicing bungy jumping. But sometimes that happens and it's ok, thank goodness.

What is the job of the umbilical cord?

The umbilical cord, which connects your baby to the placenta, contains three vessels: two arteries, which carry blood from the baby to the placenta, and one vein, which carries blood back to the baby. The blood in the arteries contains waste products, such as carbon dioxide, from the baby's metabolism.

Mastectomy Drain Breast Cancer Treatment

The purpose of drains after mastectomy is to drain away the fluid that can gather in the armpit region or around the scar on the chest wall. Some people after mastectomy also find that fluid gathers around the shoulder blade area on their back - this seems more common if the muscle from the back has been used for breast reconstruction at the time the mastectomy was done. When mastectomy is done - and especially if the lymph nodes are removed from the axilla or armpit - then there is a lot of tissue fluid and lymph fluid left with no where to go.
