This is such a touching story!
Mr Thomas took to Instagram to post a letter in which Ethan had answered that the three things he would like most this Christmas are: “Playmobil, lego, and mummy back”.
Mr Thomas posted the letter along with the caption: “I just wish I could give him the third. #heartbreaking #lightinthedarkness”.
Also on the note, the lad had ticked the box saying he had been “nice” this year, and drawn a picture of Father Christmas.
The moving letter comes after Mr Thomas shared Ethan’s “beautiful” response to Gemma’s rings being returned to the family.
He wrote: “Her wedding rings are back with me. I showed them to Ethan this morning and he said — “Daddy, when I get married, can I give them to my wife?’ His heart is beyond measure #lightinthedarkness”.
The tear-jerking request struck a chord with many, and was met with a flood of supportive comments.
Rose Harding wrote: “For a boy so young amazing for him to think like that for the future.
“His mum will be looking down so proud and whoever gets this ring in the future what a special moment.”
Louise Hewitt posted: “Your Son is a testament not only to your beautiful wife but also to you.
“Your son is truly your #lightinthedarkness may he bring you some joy this Christmas.”
Another wrote: “Beautiful heart and mind.”
Mr Thomas revealed Gemma had lost her battle to cancer in November, saying he was “crushed with indescribable pain”.
She had only been diagnosed with the killer disease three days earlier, when she went to the doctors after feeling unwell.
She began chemotherapy and despite initially responding well, her condition deteriorated and Mr Thomas was told on November 24 she had just hours to live.

She died later that night surrounded by friends and family.
