This is really hard. People may say that it's easy to tell people. But it's not. The first thing is getting your head around it. Then being stronge enough to take on board people's reactions and opinions. That's a hard one because they don't think.
Tips for telling people you have Cancer - that C word everyone hates
- Break the news when you feel ready, when you are able to cope with advice. (Some of it won't be good so only take from it what you need)
- Ask for help. Family and friends may be able to tell others if you don't feel like it. Share the load.
- Be prepared for questions. There will be many.
- Draw boundaries. You don't have to share every detail about your diagnosis with everyone. Look after yourself here. People will say I would do this !!!
- Remember they don't know what they would do. They can't know. So look after you, they are trying to help. But also they are trying to justify why they won't get Cancer. It's just something that people sometimes cause more hard than good without knowing it. People are not doctors, only doctors are doctors.
- Don't listen to other people's horror stories. It's scarey enough right??? I didn't need anyone make me scared.
- Confide in your best friend. Zu was my absolute rock. We could talk about anything and she was a great sounding block. She was just as scared as me, but that's ok. That's where girlfriends really help. Over a coffee or a wine we together armed up for a battle. #help #friends #cancer #coping #tellingpeople #positivity #life
