Body swallowed one of her breast implants




This happened 246 days ago. I have never even thought this would happen:

The story of a woman’s right breast implant popping between her ribs during her workout is scaring the shit out of women everywhere who’ve contemplated doing Pilates. But it’s not the “Valsalva maneuver” that did it: While it’s true that breast implants can complicate certain types of exercise, her story is extreme, and was likely caused by a totally separate heart surgery that required an incision between her ribs.
The 59-year-old woman, who hasn’t been identified for privacy purposes, had breast reconstruction surgery following a double mastectomy due to recurring breast cancer. As in other mastectomy patients, her implants were inserted between her pectoral muscles and rib cage, to appear more natural (due to the lack of tissue above the muscles). But where connective tissues would normally hold the implants in place, the patient had reportedly had also received heart surgery (unrelated to her breast reconstruction) that required an incision to be made between her ribs, which is where doctors suspect her body was able to “swallow” her implant, according to ABC News:

“I remember her saying, ‘My body swallowed my boob,’” Dr. Tiffany Fong, resident physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, told ABCNews.com. An ultrasound performed in the emergency room helped doctors find the implant, which was lodged between the lower part of the woman’s right lung and ribcage. … The woman described had also undergone a procedure to repair one of her heart valves, which required surgeons to re-enter from the same incision used for her reconstruction operation. The heart valve procedure required surgeons to create a tiny incision between her ribs. According to Rosson, the incision from the heart procedure, not the breast reconstruction, caused the implant to move out of place. “It made a tiny enough opening to make the breast implant fall through,” said Rosson. “If you just have breast reconstruction alone, this is highly unlikely.”

Which is why I maintain that my biggest risk of injury in a Pilates class comes from the possibility of slipping on my own sweat and getting something caught in those reformer springs. Not that you should be afraid of pilates.
